Suzano proposes a new, ambitious long-term biodiversity conservation goal

A clear commitment to connect and restore Brazil’s 500,000 hectares of Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic forest biomes by 2030

Sukarno is the world’s leading producer of eucalyptus pulp and paper and a global benchmark for eucalyptus bio-product manufacturing. It announced a new long-term biodiversity conservation goal at the first ESG investor conference on June 25, 2021 .

Susano’s ambitious goal is to connect Brazil’s 500,000 hectares of priority protected areas by 2030, especially the Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic forest biomes. This area covers an area equivalent to the sum of Paris, Madrid, Moscow, Oslo and Rio de Janeiro.

The biodiversity target is the result of research and mapping conducted by Susano and the Institute of Ecological Futures in the past year. Sukarno is committed to protecting best practices and complying with Brazilian and international policies. To ensure this, Susano has extensive contacts and consultations with more than 50 domestic and international stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, public and private sector organizations, and academia. This research allowed Susano to identify and assess the opportunities and challenges associated with protecting the biodiversity of Brazil’s most in need of protection.

Susano believes that the most effective way to support biodiversity is to reverse the fragmentation of habitats by creating “biodiversity corridors.” Fragmentation is one of the main threats to the Brazilian biome. By 2030, Susano will work tirelessly with local and international stakeholders to connect approximately 1,850 isolated forest fragments to reduce and where possible To eliminate threats to biodiversity in various regions.

Sukarno will focus on the links between the biological communities in the areas where it has forests, as well as the protection of existing natural habitats and protected areas defined by the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, as well as the comprehensive protection and protection designated by the National Conservation Unit System (SNUC) unit.

In order to achieve this goal, Sukarno focuses on contact, participation and protection. Based on these pillars, the company will implement biodiversity corridors, create a network of protected areas, protect primate and palm tree populations, establish a business model that creates shared value and biodiversity production, and take actions to reduce the impact of human activities on biodiversity. The biodiversity challenges that Susano hopes to solve through the new biodiversity targets include minimizing harmful changes to the ecological composition of the landscape, reducing genetic variation and potential extinction caused by species isolation, and losing resistance to climate change. Susano’s broader conservation and biodiversity efforts include maintaining a database that monitors more than 2,700 species of plants, birds, and mammals, including endangered species. Sukarno’s existing 960,000 hectares of protected areas have been mainly distributed in Brazil’s Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and Amazon biomes. These areas include permanent protected areas and legally protected areas (as required by Brazilian law), as well as high-value land voluntarily designated by the company, totaling 57,000 hectares of habitats vital to Brazil and the world.

In addition to the new biodiversity targets, Sukarno also pledged to achieve more ambitious environmental, social and governance-related goals by 2030. This includes: (1) Development and production of 10 million tons of renewable products derived from biomass to replace plastics and other petroleum products; (2) Removal of substances equivalent to 40 million tons of carbon equivalent from the atmosphere; (3) Direct Helped approximately 200,000 people living in the areas where the organization operates out of poverty.
